Where We are Now

In February 2010, BENCHS moved into a new 6,500-sq. ft. facility. The Riverside Regional Pet Shelter (RRPS) is home for 80 animals. Isolation wards, cat condos, zoned ventilation, and easy-to-maintain surfaces for better hygiene help to improve animal health.

The"green" building, designed by Paulsen Architects, utilizes the latest technology and is dedicated to creating a sustainable, environmentally-friendly facility that will minimize operating expenses and maintenance. The RRPS is the first building in southern Minnesota to be LEED Certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.)

What is a "green" building?

Increasing efficiency in the use of energy, water, and materials while reducing  impacts on environmental health are the main goals of "green" building design. Our building plan has the highest possible "green" rating, determined by six areas:  the building site, water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources, interior environmental quality, and innovation and design processes.

The Building Fund

The Capital Campaign is now the Building Fund. Because of construction errors and cost overruns, the money raised by the Capital Campaign didn't cover the entire cost of the building. We had to borrow, and we really need to rid ourselves of this monthly outlay of funds. We can't take money f rom the operating fund, which is also vital.  We continue to need help form our supporters. Please consider making an additional donation to the RRPS Building Fund.

Bricks and Pavers

Consider purchasing a brick or paver, which will be permanently placed in a decorative sidewalk or garden area leading up to the Riverside Regional Pet Shelter. This is a wonderful way to honor a special pet, friend, or family member.  Bricks and pavers will be engraved with state-of-the-art technology, guaranteed to last a lifetime. If it is in honor or memory of a pet, we can add a pawprint to your message.

  • $500 for a 4x8 brick
  • $1,000 for an 8x8 paver

Update on the Memorial Garden Bricks & Pavers -- December, 2011

We learned that the area specified for the Memorial Garden is actually classified as wetland, which by law cannot be altered. This fall, we had that area delineated to define the boundaries of the wetland. The delineation has been sent to the City of Mankato for review and approval.

Once approved by the city, we can begin to make changes to the area -- with respect to wetland classification. We're tentatively planning to work with Master Gardeners to install limestone gravel as a base for the walkway. We hope to install the bricks and pavers next spring.  THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE!
