About BENCHS

Picture
The Blue Earth Nicollet County Humane Society (BENCHS) was established in 1969. Each year, BENCHS cares for hundreds of homeless, injured, abandoned, and abused animals. Staff can also provide guidance about pet behavior and training to develop informed and caring pet guardians.

BENCHS is a nonprofit organization and does not receive city funding or support from national animal welfare or humane associations. The shelter operates with limited paid staff, and relies on the generosity of donors and volunteers to maintain quality care for the pets it accepts and places.

BENCHS accepts animals from Blue Earth and Nicollet Counties, the Mankato Animal Impound and the Blue Earth County Impound. Every month, about 50 animals are brought to the shelter.   BENCHS is a no-kill shelter. We treat and care for all animals until they are adopted.

The Blue Earth Nicollet County Humane Society is not only about caring for animals, but also about humanity. The love and comfort of a pet sustains a person through the most difficult of times, providing unconditional friendship and love. Properly caring for a pet instills in children a sense of responsibility and compassion which remains throughout their lives. The services of an animal shelter reach all segments of society, from the wealthy to the destitute, from preschoolers to the retired, and those who are shut in.

Our Location

In February 2010, BENCHS moved into a new 6,500-sq. ft. facility. The Riverside Regional Pet Shelter (RRPS) is home for 80 animals. Isolation wards, cat condos, zoned ventilation, and easy-to-maintain surfaces for better hygiene help to improve animal health.

The "green" building, designed by Paulsen Architects, utilizes the latest technology and is dedicated to creating a sustainable, environmentally-friendly facility that will minimize operating expenses and maintenance. The RRPS is the first building in southern Minnesota to be LEED Certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.)
