Stella continued

It was at that moment that I realized I had to at least try to find a way to bring her home. I talked to my family and explained that Stella was a senior cat that would need more dental work, was terrified at the shelter, hid so much that no-one noticed her and would be there for a long time, but that she trusted me and when she did get adopted I would be sad to see her go. They weren’t thrilled about the idea of getting a cat, but they agreed to let me get her. The next morning I went to the shelter and stopped the bio from going out in the newsletter. “I’m planning on adopting Stella,” I announced.
A few days later Stella came home with me. She went straight to what would become her favorite hiding spot, but then slowly started to explore her new home. She was too scared to climb up on my bed, so I moved it to the floor where it remained. She never did warm up too much to new people, although she would warily let some of my family pet her. Whenever I was home she would be curled up on my lap or under my chin, and when I wasn’t she would be waiting for me by the door or on the bed. She also loved her special sunny perch on the window-sill.
Sadly, only 3 months after I brought her home she passed away suddenly of advanced stage heart disease, which had not shown symptoms during her vet exams and couldn’t have been prevented even if it had. I was devastated, and still miss her, although I am glad her last few months were happy ones. She truly was a once-in-a-lifetime cat, and I am glad I brought her home. Scared, shy, senior kitties need love too.
