CAN TRAILER

FACEBOOK POSTED...11-17-2016
We have a can trailer!!! This will really help with taking them in however we need a little help from you.

Only Aluminum goes in here!! No bags. No tin. No plastic. No garbage. Just aluminum that will turn into 💰 for the shelter!!

Steps are still being built as we realized it might be hard for some to get up on the platform. If you cannot get up there leave the bags by the hitch and we will empty them into the kennel.

Please share the word that we could really use cans...it is any easy way to give!!

Certified Dog Walker Classes Set

A class is being offered to our dog walk volunteers given by a professional dog trainer. We expect a commitment from the people that take the class to walk the shelter dogs at least 6 times a month. Their activities are then monitored and at a later date invited to take a certification test given by the trainer.  The advantage of being a certified dog walker is that you can walk the dogs on off  hours.

Dates set are July 31 and also August 14.  Classes start at 10:45am and go to 12:15pm.
Please let the front desk know which date you would like to attend.

Transporting our aluminum cans for re-cycling

We need our aluminum cans transferred to the recycling center this week.
1) Do you have  a truck?
2)Do you have time during the day to load up and transport?

It might take several loads depending on your truck capacity!
This is an important source of income for us and our usual driver is not available this week and they are piling up!

Contact Molly at rrps@hickorytech.net.
Thank you!!

Music, Art, Soul...

Old Town Art Fair partners with MRCI Coffee Hag hosts event full of music, artists’ booths
By Esther Marcella Hoffmann
Special to The Free Press
Perhaps, you were there. June 6, 2015 was a sunny afternoon.
As MC of the 5th Annual Old Town Art fair, I watched from back stage as RakStar Fusion Belly dancers finished their set. I was the one with a cloth flower, purchased from the Ashely Rose booth, in my hair.
As the jingling troupe body rolled and snake armed a crowd trilled and whooped. Bubbles floated. I took in the colors of the artist booths lining a partitioned Washington Street.
The 6th Annual Old Town Art Fair (OTAF) takes place Saturday at the corner of Riverfront Drive and Washington Street. RakStar Fusion along with other artists and performers return.
RakStar Fusion has celebrated music and movement at each Old Art Fairs and says, collectively, “We show up to support our fellow artists wind, sleet, sun, or hail; we’ll dance at the art fair without fail.”
Hosted and created by the Coffee Hag, the music and art fair is characterized by those 10-by-10 artists booths where works are made and sold by the artists themselves.
The Coffee Hag’s general manager Rhett Waldock says, “OTAF is designed to be an opportunity to sell art work and offer a unique day-long, face-to-face opportunity between the community and the artist.”
From the beginning, OTAF selected a charitable partner that receives all proceeds — booth fees, cash donations, and Coffee Hag sales.
Past partners include: Mid-west Arts Catalyst, benchs and South Central Minnesota Pride. This year, Old Town Art Fair is partnering with MRCI WorkSource. MRCI assists more than 4,000 individuals living with disabilities throughout southern Minnesota and the Twin Cities Metro Area.
In May, the Coffee Hag participated in Community Cup for A Cause and donated 15 percent of sales to MRCI’s work program. Waldock says, “We enjoyed working with them and want to enable all members of our community to have a livelihood that they enjoy.”
Ted Ornas, MRCI WorkSource business development manager, is excited to attend and man a booth.

Leadership changes at the shelter

Just as puppies and kittens grow and change, so do organizations.  BENCHS has been growing too. You may have noticed some changes in the staff at BENCHS over the last few weeks – and there are more coming!  Early this month, Katherine stepped down from her position as Shelter Director.  Her compassion and gentle care for the puppies, kittens and hurting animals that found their way to BENCHS is unmatched and we miss her.   After taking a well-deserved break, we hope to see her back here caring for the animals.

The Board of Directors used Katherine’s resignation as an opportunity to examine how we run the shelter as it continues to grow in numbers of adoptable cats and dogs and programs within a finite amount of space.  On February 18, Molly Harvey joined the staff as Shelter Director, handling much of the administrative work of the shelter along with general oversight of animal care.  Allison Raney is our new, Animal Care Manager, her duties entail making sure that our animals are healthy and well-cared for while waiting for their forever homes. The Lead Animal Care Technician (ACT) position has been added to the management team, and we are excited to promote Laurel Viera, an experienced ACT, into that role.  Laurel is currently working on some special projects.

We think that this new direction of shared responsibility has the potential to allow for growth in our programs, our animal care, and our employees
